WELCOME

This Black History Month, I’m honouring the voices that uplift, soothe, and empower. These songs by Black British artists speak to healing, motherhood, and quiet courage — the same values that shape Ruthy Michaels

Cleo Sol’s ‘Sunshine’ reminds me of the quiet joy we carry — especially as mums, especially when the world forgets our light

Soulful Sounds

For me, it’s a reminder to keep going — even when the world feels heavy. A rhythm of resilience, a melody of motion.

Sade’s “Paradise” reminds me of my son’s first trip to Nigeria — the heat, the questions, the moment he said, “I’m home now” when we arrived back in Europe. This song holds the ache and the grace of belonging to more than one world.

Pip Millett’s “Heavenly Mother” is a quiet reckoning — a prayer for healing, a song about choosing growth over bitterness.

Jamelia’s “See It in a Boy’s Eyes” is about the pain we don’t say out loud — and the strength it takes to see it anyway.
