Who’s Speaking Into Your Life?

Adam and Eve in the Garden.
Adam and Eve in the Garden.

“Did God really say…?” That was the serpent’s whisper to Eve. A little doubt, a little twist of the truth — and the consequences were huge.

Later in scripture, we see Amnon, who claimed to be in love with Tamar, his half-sister. But the real turning point? His cousin’s terrible advice. One friend, one conversation, and the aftermath tore David’s family apart — leading to bitterness, division, and ultimately, the death of Absalom.

Now, here’s the question: who is speaking into your life?

In my community, we say, “When people advise you, even if you follow the advice, it’s usually what you already wanted to do.” It’s a sobering thought. Sometimes the advice we accept isn’t new wisdom — it’s just permission to do what we secretly hoped to.

But here’s the danger: the wrong voices can break friendships, strain marriages, and sow seeds of resentment. One careless opinion, one bit of gossip, one “you should leave him” or “you deserve better than that” — and families, relationships, and even faith can crumble.

So today, I encourage you (and myself):

  • Pause before acting on advice.

  • Weigh it against your values and faith.

  • Ask yourself: “Is this wisdom, or is this just noise?”

Because not every voice deserves a seat at the table of your life, do not rush to take actions based on advice. Think it over and over again.

Sometimes the best way to clear the noise of outside voices is to slow down, reflect, and listen inwardly — whether that’s through prayer, journaling, or even colouring in silence
