Treating Yourself Well — A Mum’s Guide to Emotional & Physical Self-Care

The colouring page "I treat myself well" is being coloured, and the front cover of the "Daily Affirmations Colouring Book," which contains this colouring page, among others.

This month’s affirmation is simple but powerful: “I treat myself well.”

Not “I survive.” Not “I cope.” Not “I put everyone else first as usual.” But I treat myself well.

As mums, this doesn’t come naturally. We’re used to stretching ourselves thin for everyone else. But this December, I want us to choose something better — self-care rooted in God’s heart for us.

Here’s what treating yourself well can look like, one small step at a time:

1️⃣ Release resentment — it’s too heavy for you

Sis, resentment ages the soul. You can’t walk in joy while dragging the weight of old hurts.

Forgiveness is not pretending it didn’t happen. It’s choosing not to let bitterness drain you dry.

Set yourself free.

2️⃣ Eat like you value the body God gave you

I know Christmas sugar calls our name like it’s personal. But treating yourself well isn’t punishment — it’s nourishment.

Your body carries nations. It deserves love, not leftovers.

3️⃣ Move — even a small walk counts

You don’t need a gym membership or a fancy routine. Just move. A short stroll. A stretch. A moment of fresh air. Move away from that hair. Get up. Stop calling your children to help you fetch every little thing, even the ones right in front of your nose. Those children are not deaf; they are just tired of coming downstairs for the umpteenth time to fetch something out of the kitchen for you, while you are sitting in the living room. MOVE.

Movement clears the fog and settles the mind.

4️⃣ Reflect — the secret ingredient of growth

You cannot grow without reflection. Celebrate your wins — even the tiny ones. Give yourself grace for the messy moments. Learn, reset, and keep moving forward.

5️⃣ Love yourself the way you love others

We mums pour out everything: love, time, affection, labour, advice, prayer… all of it.

But treating yourself well means giving yourself the same tenderness you freely give to your family.

That’s not selfish. It’s necessary.

A simple tool to help you put this into practice

Self-care doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes it’s just a quiet moment with a colouring page — your mind slowing down, your heart breathing, your spirit settling.

That’s why I design my colouring books specifically for busy mums who need a peaceful pause built into their day.

Because treating yourself well isn’t a luxury, it’s an act of worship, stewardship, and healing.
