Are There Colouring Books With Affirmations for Black Women and Girls?
By Lola Olajide, Founder of Ruthy Michaels
Yes. And it matters more than you might think.
If you've ever searched for a colouring book that actually reflects you, or your daughter, you'll know the frustration. Shelves full of generic florals and cartoon animals are beautiful, but rarely speak directly to the experience of being a Black woman or raising a Black girl in a world that doesn't always affirm either.
That gap is exactly why these books exist.
Why representation in self-care tools matters
Self-care isn't one-size-fits-all. The affirmations that ground you have to feel like yours, written in a voice that understands your story, not a borrowed one.
For Black women, that might mean affirmations that speak to resilience, authenticity, and the reclamation of rest in a culture that often expects you to carry everyone else first. For Black girls, it means seeing words like "I am strong," "I am beautiful," "I am determined" paired with illustrations that look like them, because confidence is built in childhood, page by page, page after page.
The books
"I Am Authentic" is a quiet, healing colouring book created for Black women. Thirty pages, each holding a single affirmation — I am inspiring. I am authentic. I am an overcomer. The illustrations are deliberately minimal, so the words have room to breathe. This isn't a book to rush through. It's a space to pause.
"For Black Girls: I Have a Future" is for girls aged 5 to 11. Thirty bold affirmation pages designed to nurture identity and self-worth early, gently reinforcing that her voice, her skin, and her presence matter, one colouring session at a time.
(There's a companion book for boys too: "For Black Boys: I Have a Future" — pairing 30 affirmations with confidence-building activities.)
How to use them
There's no wrong way. Some women colour a page at a time before bed, reading the affirmation aloud as they go. Some mums sit down with their daughters and colour the same affirmation together, turning a few quiet minutes into a shared moment of "we believe this about you, and about us."
Either way, the goal is the same: a few minutes where the only thing being filled in is colour, and the only thing being reinforced is worth.
A gentle reminder
If you've been looking for something that feels like it was made with you in mind rather than adapted for you, this is it. You deserve tools that speak your language, in every sense.
